    Her father emigrated from Trinidad and Tobago to pursue studies at the University of Toronto. Descended from African slaves, Ien's early exposure to media began at age 10 when she appeared on the Christian children's television show "Circle Square." She later graduated from Ryerson University's School of Radio and Television Arts (RTA School of Media).
